Re-grounding the Archive opens up Van Alen’s history to an archeological examination of its institutional attitudes towards the ground, land, environment, and the city over time. Each “core” references competition proposals at a various moment in the institution’s identity, particularly projects that articulate a position toward the ground. Heeding Bruno Latour’s call to bring climate change politics “down to earth,” Re-grounding the Archive examines how the archive has represented (or not) architecture’s relationship to the ground over the last 100 years. The project samples local objects, spaces, and moments and turns them into life-sized, three-dimensional sketches using augmented reality. As the collection of hand-drawn, animated objects grows over time, it stokes the imagination around the island’s lively public, cultural, and infrastructural assets and encourages playful site activation. The project tests a new hybrid genre in Ng’s interdisciplinary practice between architecture, media, and cartoons. Instead of privileging photorealistic renditions of the built environment, as is typical of AI renderings, digital twins, or surveying tools such as photogrammetry, these digital scribbles fall somewhere between architectural entourage and lightweight sketches. Rather than a static capture of reality, this record can be continuously added to as spaces, inhabitants, activities, and ecologies change over time. Island Assets renews our attention to the intangible value and stories built into the places around us. Miniature screens are planted in the vicinity of the Block House in Nolan Park, embedding various real-world assets such as trees and public furniture with digital animations. Link︎︎︎Full Issue PDF︎︎︎ Along the path to developing computer vision, the built environment is surveilled, framed, and tagged through bounding boxes. The bounding box is an annotative device used in AI training—a rectangular frame temporarily drawn over an image in order to isolate an object or “region of interest.” I wish to recast the bounding box as a device that irrevocably binds the graphical with the spatial and the social—that is, as a relational rather than classificatory technique of visualization. ecological repair of the ground. Cities not only experience an overwhelming frequency of heatwaves, storm surges, and floods due to climate change—their hot, impervious surfaces also often compound these effects by design. Asphalt, concrete, and compacted urban soil covers parking lots, playgrounds, industrial edges, and floodplains; a “carbon form” that must be addressed in a green transition. In NYC, the long-range need for resilient urban surfaces is apparent, and, we believe, begins with reframing ground conditions. This exhibition examines depaving as an act of social and ecological repair. DEPAVE prompts us to imagine new regenerative futures and collective participation, in the construction of a shared ground that extends beyond private property lines. Over the last decade, as sensors and software have merged with the hardware of the household, doorbell cameras have transformed the front door, porch, building facade, and the app-networked neighborhood into a zone of continuous surveillance. To see like a doorbell is to see like a state and a market simultaneously. Fron Amazon Ring to Flock Safety, this article examines “smart” doorbell technology through the one-way viewer / the platform-seeing ensemble, the property setback / precarious delivery worker, and the door / the Fourth Amendment.
